Root canal therapy
Root canal therapy at Smiling Dental is the process of removing the infected nerve in a tooth. Left untreated, the tooth continues to become infected until an abscess forms which may lead to severe pain, swelling and may require tooth removal.
The most common reasons why root canal treatment is required are:
- A cracked tooth
- A deep cavity
- A severe knock to the tooth.
There are a number of benefits to root canal therapy. It will stop the pain, prevent the bacteria from spreading and the original tooth will be saved. Our dentists will inform you whether you need root canal therapy. They will also go through the problem so that you understand the treatment required.
How do I know if I need root canal therapy?
You may have root canal infection if you are experiencing the following symptoms:
- Lingering sensitivity to either hot/cold drinks or food
- Pain from biting down
- Spontaneous toothache with no cause i.e. pain while reading a magazine, watching tv
- Constant or intermittent pain
- Severe or throbbing pain
- Swelling on your gums
Pain is not the defining feature of this dental problem. A large infection sometimes only show as pain when you have a large facial swelling. So that is why it is important to have regular checkups. That way if there is an infection we can treat it swiftly and early.
Do I need a crown as part of the treatment?
We strongly recommend a dental crown to strengthen and maintain the tooth for years to come. As there is no longer a nerve keeping the tooth alive, root-treated teeth often become brittle. In the majority of cases, root canal treated teeth are almost hollow on the inside, making them prone to fracture. Root canal therapy treated teeth require the strength of a crown to protect the remaining tooth. Without it you will have a high risk of re-infection or tooth fracture.
