Crowns are tooth-like coverings that are used to protect and restore worn, damaged or broken teeth. They are commonly used for teeth which have been structurally weakened by a large cavity or root canal therapy. Crowns are also commonly used for cosmetic reasons including enhancing the size, colour, shape and position of teeth.
At Smiling Dental we use all ceramic crowns which look as natural as your own teeth. With current technology, all ceramic crowns have proven to be as strong as traditional porcelain-fused metal crowns. Ceramic crowns leave no black line at the gum level as seen with traditional metal crowns, as there is no metal to be so visibly shown. This is especially a concern with front teeth, as any compromises in the appearance of the smile will be very noticeable.
Crowns are planned over 2 appointments. The tooth is prepared and shaped to allow for the new crown to fit around the tooth. An impression of the tooth is taken. This impression allows us to communicate with our excellent dental technicians to create the most life-like and best fitting crown for your tooth. At the second appointment these are cemented in with a bonding system that bonds the crowns to the tooth. The crowns are polished and bite checked. We then review our patients to make sure all is well.
